My favorite Convertible Car Seat for Travel
My favorite Infant Travel Car Seat
Both these car seats are airline certified, which means they are narrow enough for an airline seat & able to be installed on a plane.
We’ve always purchased a separate seat for our toddler — even when he was an infant — and honestly, it has been one of the best travel decisions we’ve made as parents. While it can feel tempting to save money by having a baby fly as a lap infant, having an extra seat has made flying significantly less stressful for our family. Having his own designated space on the plane gives everyone a little more comfort and flexibility during travel days. Instead of juggling a wiggly toddler for an entire flight, we’re able to keep our hands free, stay more organized, and settle into a much smoother routine once we board. It also helps create a familiar environment for him, which is incredibly important when traveling with little ones.
One of the biggest reasons we continue to do this is because our toddler has always slept best in his car seat. The familiarity and comfort of his own seat helps him relax much easier on flights, especially during nap times or early morning travel days. A sleeping toddler on a plane is priceless, and using his car seat has consistently given us the best chance at a peaceful, well-rested flight.
As he’s gotten older, we transitioned from his infant seat to a convertible car seat for travel, and it has worked out so well for our family. Not only is he already comfortable and familiar with it, but we also know exactly how it functions, how it fits him, and how to install it safely. That peace of mind is huge when you’re traveling away from home.
Bringing our own car seat is especially important for trips where we’ll be renting a car at our destination. In the past, we’ve had some pretty questionable experiences with rental car company car seats. Some looked heavily worn, some didn’t seem very clean, and others were frustratingly difficult to install correctly. As parents, there’s already enough to worry about while traveling — wondering if a rental car seat is properly installed or safe shouldn’t be one of them.
Using our own car seat allows us to avoid that uncertainty completely. We know the full history of the seat, we know it hasn’t been damaged or mishandled, and we know exactly how to install it securely. It also protects us from the risk of arriving at our destination only to discover that the rental company is out of seats, has the wrong size available, or provides one that doesn’t feel safe or reliable.
Another benefit is that gate-checking or checking a car seat with luggage can sometimes lead to damage that isn’t always visible right away. By bringing the car seat onboard and installing it in his own seat, we know it’s being handled carefully throughout the trip. That extra reassurance is worth it for us, especially since car seats are such an important piece of safety equipment.
At the end of the day, every family travels differently, but for us, purchasing a seat for our toddler and bringing our own car seat has made flying feel safer, more comfortable, and much more manageable overall. It may cost a little more upfront, but the convenience, peace of mind, and smoother travel experience have absolutely been worth it for our family.
